I understand that there are pros and cons to egg freezing for unmarried women.

For me, it is a matter of personal freedom of choice, so I don't think it is necessary to argue for or against it, but I would like to share my personal reasons for my decision to freeze my own eggs.

Egg freezing for unmarried women is referred to as socially acceptable egg freezing.

Typical concerns include:

  • Induction of ovulation and egg retrieval in healthy women, which can lead to complications.
  • There is no certainty that a pregnancy will occur in the future if the eggs are frozen and stored.
  • There is a possibility of high-risk pregnancies (pregnancies that are prone to various problems during pregnancy) if the woman becomes pregnant at an older age.
  • The treatment is not covered by insurance, so the cost will be expensive.

It is necessary to understand the above and make your own decision.

I often hear the term "egg freezing for unmarried women = insurance/option for the future".

What does that mean?

When I think about it, I feel that it is likely to become even more difficult to conceive naturally in the future, not just because of age.

In addition to late marriages and delayed childbearing as women enter the workforce, changes in diet and other factors have affected physique. While the age of menarche is becoming younger, it has also been confirmed that diseases such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids are increasing due to the decrease in the number of births. In fact, with the declining birthrate, one in 14 babies is now born through in vitro fertilization (data from 2021). The issue of "infertility" is now being faced by all women, not just those who are over the legal age of conception.

Then, do you want a life with children? A life without? There is no right answer, and it is not an easy decision to make. It is not something you can decide alone. It is perfectly fine if you cannot make a decision just because you have reached the age of majority in society.

Besides, there are many different types of families nowadays, and there is no single definition of "parent."

However, since I was born as a woman, I think I should be more interested and proactive in making my life easier by increasing my knowledge and understanding of my body, even if only a little. I think that freezing my eggs this time was a great benefit for me because I was able to face my fertility (the power to conceive). For some reason, understanding my own body gave me some peace of mind. As all women have probably experienced and understand, menstruation, ovulation, and fertility are greatly influenced by the mental aspect of the body, and self-awareness is a very powerful thing. I know I keep repeating this, but in the end, it is a personal choice that you have to make freely.

I hope that all women can make the best choice for themselves and live a positive life with an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages.
